Hen Dafarn is the ideal location to stay while enjoying the Edwardian Castle and walled town of Conwy or exploring the surrounding countryside including the dramatic beauty of the Snowdonia Mountains. Hen Dafarn, is a spacious townhouse in Conwy, dating from the 15th century and recently updated to provide modern convenience amid period detail. Conwy is a medieval walled town with a magnificent castle and a World Heritage Site. The Castle is nestled against a picturesque quay and set against the stunning mountainous backdrop of the Snowdonia National Park. The circuit of walls over three quarters of a mile long is guarded by 22 towers and is one of the finest in the World. Hen Dafarn is located on a narrow but quiet residential street in the center of town. It is sited within the town walls of this small historic town and makes an ideal base being just a few minutes’ walk from the castle, a lovely marina which hosts many fairs and festivals, specialist and national shops, quality restaurants and traditional pubs.

Conwy, along with the beautiful surrounding countryside and coastline, is the perfect location for your holiday. Whatever you want to do – explore the mountains and shores, go sightseeing, enjoy sports or maybe just relax and enjoy great food and wine, whilst taking in the ambiance, you will find that Conwy caters for all. You can enjoy beautiful unspoiled beaches, visit local historic houses and the majestic Victorian splendour of Llandudno. Being only 75 minutes drive from Manchester, Conwy on the North Wales coast, is easily accessible by train or car.

Hen Dafarn, ‘the old tavern’, was recently renovated to the highest standard and is stylishly furnished and decorated while maintaining the character of its 15th century construction. Old ship beams, which are exposed throughout the house, add to its charm. Hen Dafarn is deceptively spacious and can sleep 4-6. As you enter the cottage you are immediately taken by the large stone inglenook fireplace with a convenient and eco friendly gas stove. The comfortable seating area invites you to relax under the open plan beamed living and dining area with TV and WiFi. The well-equipped new kitchen, including ample storage space, induction cooktop, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer, has contemporary folding doors leading straight out into the large slate-flagged south facing courtyard garden. The garden is equipped with table and chairs and BBQ. This secluded, peaceful and sunny patio is the perfect setting for alfresco dining during the summer months. On the first floor is a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a modern family bathroom with an over bath shower. Stairs to the 2nd floor lead to an impressive mezzanine double bedroom whose windows open out to beautiful views of Conwy Castle, the 12th century town church clock tower, the Tudor mansion Plas Mawr, and the boats at anchor on the Conwy estuary. An ensuite shower room completes the suite. Parking is either on the road by the front door or car parks are available nearby.

Conwy is becoming an exciting and interesting place to visit all year round. There are many local festivals and activities, so summer or winter we believe that you will find Hen Dafarn to be a comfortable retreat from the hustle and bustle of urban life while retaining the amenities of a modern world.

DOWNSTAIRS: Open plan spacious living room with comfortable seating and a large stone inglenook with gas fired fireplace and attached dining area. The living area opens onto a large modern kitchen including dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. Contemporary folding doors lead straight out into the large slate-flagged south facing courtyard garden.
UPSTAIRS: First and second floor with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. First floor contains a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a modern bathroom with over the bath shower. Second floor is totally taken up with an impressive mezzanine double bedroom whose windows open out to views of the both 12th century Conwy Castle and St. Mary’s Church Bell Tower which chimes the hours. An ensuite shower room completes the suite.
The kitchen was installed as part of the recent new addition to the cottage. All of the utilities were added as part of that remodel and are brand new. The kitchen comes nicely equipped with all of the modern utensils and cookware that you will need, provided you do not eat all of your meals at the excellent pubs and restaurants in Conwy and the nearby towns. All bed and bath linens, tea towels, electricity and gas for heating, lighting and hot water are included in the rental cost. There is gas central heating that works well and the gas fired stove is so efficient that you will need to keep it low or you will overheat.
The cottage is immaculately prepared for you and all beds are made prior to your arrival. A welcome pack provides some food essentials to get you started. There is a south facing patio at the back of Hen Dafarn that you can enjoy in good weather. A BBQ and comfortable seating invites you to enjoy the warm evenings in the summer. There is also plenty of fresh air to be had by walking down to the quay, local beaches, around the castle walls or across the bridge to Deganwy. Snowdonia National Park, and the Conwy valley with their wonderful countryside are close by. There is limited parking on the street outside the house or parking in the town parks for a small fee.

Great break in the “Old Pub” (Hen Dafarn). I wonder what was its name? So much to do! Thank you for a great stay.

(From Bob – Hen Dafarn was the original name – built we understand in 1492 – when Columbus sailed the ocean blue – and yes – I am from the States although Lindsay was raised close by in Rhos-on-Sea and is obviously Welsh – thus our ownership of a townhouse inside the walls of Conwy.)

Lindsay and I love being here at our cottage in Conwy. Whilst we always have a “To Do” list – we do get out and about. My favourite morning activity is to walk down to High St about 8 AM – and up to the news stand – pick up a Telegraph and warm custard tarts as they have just been delivered. We hope that all of our guests enjoy this special place and let it renew their spirits.

What a perfect place this is – a beautiful and utterly relaxing haven to wake up in and return each day of our wonderful time rediscovering this glorious area. Came back with 87 year old mother to this area where she once lived – to reminisce and explore down “Memory Lane”. It has been 35 years – but now we hope to come back. Thank you dear Bob and Lindsay for the use of your beautiful cottage – harmouious and restful in every detail – a real pleasure to stay here and a memorable experience. Thanks to Moya for the kind helpfulness when we got stuck with the technicalities of the hob and TV!

Lindsay and I are the owners of Hen Dafarn and we enjoy being here about 4 times a year. Lindsay grew up here in Rhos-on-Sea so it is close to her home. This trip we were here for a week, and we once we got all of the maintenance items sorted we had time to enjoy the fine walks, antique shops and restaurants of the area. We want Hen Dafarn to continue to provide luxury accommodation for the discerning guests and it is our intent and that of our manager, Moya, to ensure that each of you enjoy Hen Dafarn and the area. We are always open to your suggestions so please feel free to contact us and let us know how we can improve your experience.

Recommend the Castle Hotel, Edwards butchers, chip shop at the top of the town, a drink looking at the Castle from the Quay hotel in Deganwy. All perfect.

Had an amazing time. Howe, Conwy and North Wales everything we hoped for and more. We’ll be back next year.

Beautiful house – perfect location to explore Conwy and North Wales. The parking was a problem but we managed. Check the weather for a trip to Snowden as we could not see a thing.

8 – 15 Aug 2014

We enjoyed ourselves so much last year that we came back again. We had a great time with better than forecast weather. The only issue was the parking as someone had stolen the cones so we have to carry our luggage from nearby. Understand it is an issue inside the walls.

1 – 8 Aug 2014

We had a lovely week in a lovely cottage. The situation of it is excellent. My husband’s favourite time was getting early morning papers and sitting down by the quay – a place to unwind and relax. Hope to revisit soon.

25 Jul – 1 Aug 2014

What a lovely cottage! Great location and so well renovated. We enjoyed opening the real doors for our BBQ. All in all a lovely stay and we hope to return to Hen Dafarn.

6 – 13 Jul 2014

Hi Bob and Lindsay. Thank you again for letting us stay in your lovely cottage again. We had a lovely few days – relaxed – exploring and had fun. We love staying here and we will be back next Jun and hopefully before.

15 – 22 Jun 2014

Hen Dafarn is beautiful and perfectly met the needs of our family of 5. We had sunshine everyday and not a drop of rain. Perfect weather for hiking on the Sychmont pass, Conwy mountains and the Aber Falls trail. The best meal we had was at the Castle View in Deganwy – top quality, great setting and very reasonable prices. PS – We loved the art work.

21 – 28 May 2014

We had an excellent time in Conwy and neighboring towns. House was clean and well laid out but rubbish was a bit of an issue. All in all it was a very pleasant stay.

14 – 17 May 2014

We have had a fabulous time and thank you for your amazing cottage. It is beautiful and in the best location. We have no complaints.

4 – 7 May 2014

Mr Bruvva Rover from Lancashire had a grand time! Mr Bruvva Meek from the Midlands said it was LOVE LEEZE!!! Thank you for an amazing stay in your fabulous property. Recommended to all.

We’ve had a lovely week. 4th time in the area and so many further places to discover. Several places really outstanding – Penrhyn Castle, Conwy Water Garden, The Art Gallery, Conwy Zoo have been brilliant and with sunshine. The cottage is fantastic – nicely furnished – although we imagine it was not to bad before.

2 – 7 Feb 2014

Enjoyed Conwy even in the winter. The cottage was perfect with the nice warm stove and spacious rooms. Will return in the summer.

27 Dec – 4 Jan 2013/14

Another good New Year in Hen Dafarn despite the weather. The cottage is as nice as ever but maybe more adequate facilities are needed for the rubbish. We will be back.

23 – 30 Aug 2013

16 – 23 Aug 2013

A beautiful cottage in such a fantastic location. We can’t believe that the week is over already. Weather has been great – not too hot and very little rain. The doors have been open every day. Hopefully we will be back again – so much left to do.

Jun 10 – 17 2013

This was the perfect cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our few days in Conwy. The weather cooperated and we were able to relax outside and eat on the patio. The local spa was very handy and the archway fish and chips tasty. We would love to return.

29 – 31 May 2013

We were told we would love Hen Dafarn and we have. Not at all like a holiday house but a true home away from home and beautifully renovated. A short stay but we managed to enjoy some sunshine on the patio and loved exploring Conwy. We would definitely like to come back to Hen Dafarn and hopefully for a longer stay.
